Chapter 19
Being tugged along by Mia and Sofie, Amy had little time to wonder about the conversation happening behind her, but she trusted Milo.
When they stepped into the courthouse, the girls clapped their hands, but then Miaâs smile fell away.
âWhatâs wrong?â Amy asked.
âI donât have any money. I wanted to get something for Dadoâto surprise him.â
Amy reached into her purse. âSurprising him is a great idea, and I have money.â
Mia grabbed Sofieâs hand. âWe have to find Dado something really good.â
Amy let them lead the way as they scanned tables. When Sofie spotted the kitten ornaments, she knew what she wanted.
âLetâs get a kitten. Dado likes cats.â
Amy didnât bother to argue or tell them that the last cat Milo owned habitually peed in his shoes. After that cat, he vowed never to own another.
The girls settled on a kitten ornament and a mug.
Mia pointed at the words on the mug. âIt says worldâs best Dad. Can we add an O at the end?â
Amy beamed with pride that her student had figured that out. âYes. Why donât you let me put these in my purse? Iâll make sure they get wrapped. And you can surprise him with them Christmas morning.â A pang of regret stabbed at her. She wouldnât be there to see his reaction. âBut why donât each of you pick out an ornament, so he doesnât wonder why we took so long but didnât get anything.â
Sofie picked up another kitten. âI want this one.â
Mia picked up a hand-painted bulb with a family of snowmen on it. âThis is pretty.â
After the ornaments were bagged and some hidden away, they all walked back out.
Milo was waiting just outside the door. âDid you ladies find anything good?â
The girls showed off their ornaments, and Amy didnât miss the wistful, pained looked that crossed Miloâs face when Mia showed off her ornament with the family of four: a mommy, a daddy, and two wee snowmen.
He stepped close to Amy, and in a voice too quiet for casual friendship, asked, âYou really okay with dinner?â
âYes. I donât mind at all.â She smiled, very aware that Cindee was straining to hear every word exchanged. âThe girls had fun shopping for ornaments.â
Milo reached for his back pocket.
âI donât want your money, Milo. I probably should have asked first.â It was hard not to jump feet first into the role Amy wanted, a role that felt natural and right. âIâm sorry.â
âItâs fine. Really.â He gazed at her a moment before gathering the girls. âHow does dinner sound?â
Sofie put her hands on her hips and cocked her head. âWill they have chicken?â
âI think we can find a place that has chicken strips or chicken nuggets.â
Cindee rolled her eyes, and Amy turned so that no one would see her battle a grin.
