Chapter 19

Being tugged along by Mia and Sofie, Amy had little time to wonder about the conversation happening behind her, but she trusted Milo.

When they stepped into the courthouse, the girls clapped their hands, but then Mia’s smile fell away.

“What’s wrong?” Amy asked.

“I don’t have any money. I wanted to get something for Dado—to surprise him.”

Amy reached into her purse. “Surprising him is a great idea, and I have money.”

Mia grabbed Sofie’s hand. “We have to find Dado something really good.”

Amy let them lead the way as they scanned tables. When Sofie spotted the kitten ornaments, she knew what she wanted.

“Let’s get a kitten. Dado likes cats.”

Amy didn’t bother to argue or tell them that the last cat Milo owned habitually peed in his shoes. After that cat, he vowed never to own another.

The girls settled on a kitten ornament and a mug.

Mia pointed at the words on the mug. “It says world’s best Dad. Can we add an O at the end?”

Amy beamed with pride that her student had figured that out. “Yes. Why don’t you let me put these in my purse? I’ll make sure they get wrapped. And you can surprise him with them Christmas morning.” A pang of regret stabbed at her. She wouldn’t be there to see his reaction. “But why don’t each of you pick out an ornament, so he doesn’t wonder why we took so long but didn’t get anything.”

Sofie picked up another kitten. “I want this one.”

Mia picked up a hand-painted bulb with a family of snowmen on it. “This is pretty.”

After the ornaments were bagged and some hidden away, they all walked back out.

Milo was waiting just outside the door. “Did you ladies find anything good?”

The girls showed off their ornaments, and Amy didn’t miss the wistful, pained looked that crossed Milo’s face when Mia showed off her ornament with the family of four: a mommy, a daddy, and two wee snowmen.

He stepped close to Amy, and in a voice too quiet for casual friendship, asked, “You really okay with dinner?”

“Yes. I don’t mind at all.” She smiled, very aware that Cindee was straining to hear every word exchanged. “The girls had fun shopping for ornaments.”

Milo reached for his back pocket.

“I don’t want your money, Milo. I probably should have asked first.” It was hard not to jump feet first into the role Amy wanted, a role that felt natural and right. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s fine. Really.” He gazed at her a moment before gathering the girls. “How does dinner sound?”

Sofie put her hands on her hips and cocked her head. “Will they have chicken?”

“I think we can find a place that has chicken strips or chicken nuggets.”

Cindee rolled her eyes, and Amy turned so that no one would see her battle a grin.
